Uncommon Elementals Part 4

I’m back with those unusual elementals, this time with fully fleshed out stat blocks for you to drop into your game.

Gold Elemental

This elemental is the result of a fire or earth elemental that has spent too long on the material plane. These elementals become tainted or twisted by the wealth around them, as they begin to consume it and hoard it. Before long, they transform into something new, but having fused with concepts and items from the material world they lose some of their connection to their home plane along with most of their alien sanity. Their bodies are made up of the countless treasures, antiques, trade goods, and other signs of wealth they have accumulated. Most of these are damaged beyond salvaging by the constant movement and impacts of the elemental’s normal movement but their magic keeps the treasures appear valuable and well-maintained. In death, a Gold Elemental’s corpse is little more than a pile of tarnished scrap.

A Gold Elemental is avaricious and jealous of mortal treasures, but it’s time on the mortal plane has given it a low cunning that is willing and able to converse with mortal beings, even if its first instinct is to steal or attack. Their fragmented sanity makes them impossible to trust, as they may forget a promise or suddenly change personalities may cause them to drop a formerly lucrative deal. They are occasionally employed, assuming payments can be structured well to deal with the above, as guardians of prisons, ley lines, or other areas without valuables they might steal. Alternatively, they may be encountered as the twisted remains of a former elemental guard of a tomb or dungeon, now trying to keep anyone else from taking a treasure they have been unable to touch for centuries.

Challenge 7

Multiattack: This elemental makes two slam attacks.

Slam: Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) bludgeoning damage.

Gold Calls to Gold:

The Gold Elemental inflicts a cumulative -1 penalty to attack, damage, and saving throws against it made by creatures possessing items with a combined value worth more than 10, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 50,000, 100,000, and 500,000. It has an attack, damage, and saving throw bonus of the same amount against those creatures.

Heart of Gold:

Destruction of an object of value within 120 ft. forces the Gold Elemental to make a DC 15 Wisdom save, or take 1d6 damage for every 100 of value of the item and lose its next action in a howl of grief. On a successful save, it takes half damage. Using disposable goods or the last use of limited items are not considered destroyed for the purposes of this ability.

Midas Stomach:

As an action, the Gold Elemental may consume a valuable item within reach that is not currently held, broken, or secured. The item is added to its form, restoring 1d4 hit points for every 100 of value of that item. On death, the item can be retrieved from the Gold Elemental, but it loses 1 hit point each minute it remains in the elemental, living or dead. Alternatively, if the Gold Elemental is helpless, a creature can use their action to make an opposed Strength or Dexterity check at disadvantage to pull a desired item from its body.

Tomes Elemental:

A Tomes Elemental is a creature made of books, scrolls, tapestries, writing utensils, and engravings that floats on a constant fluttering of its constituent papers and parchments. They are the result of a fire or air elemental kept on the material plane too long in proximity to education, law, or philosophy such that their form twists to craving the physical embodiments of those concepts. While their previous extraplanar sanity has been mostly lost, their strong connection with the mortal plane has given them an intellect ready to hunt for more knowledge. Unfortunately, its pursuit of texts and learning have done little to influence its behavior and the texts that it does consume are slowly warped by ever more precise, esoteric, and meandering rewritings that take place over the course of the elemental’s normal movement. Any information contained in an item subsumed into this elemental is quickly rendered meaningless and after the elemental’s death, it leaves behind a corpse of tattered gibberish and pseudo-philosophical ramblings useful only for tinder.

Elementals that have twisted into this form are morbidly fascinated with knowledge and will let little stand in their way of consuming more. While it may have an educated vocabulary, its garbled comprehension and utter lack of interest in most things make it very difficult to converse or deal with. Its pursuit of its goals takes little account for the mortal creatures that might need to be swept aside or attacked for getting in its way. Sometimes they are tricked into defending mazes or tombs with the hint that knowledge hides inside them, with the intent that the elemental’s poor memory and lack of planning will see it endlessly wander. Others are occasionally pressed into mercenary service with promises of steady text payments, although there are difficulties in keeping them from attacking non-hostiles that it believes have what it wants.

Challenge 5 (1,800 XP)

Multiattack: This elemental makes two slam attacks.

Slam: Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) slashing damage.

Intuitive Assault:

Tome Elementals fight in the realm of experience and prowess, using creatures’ own skills against them. Against foes with limited usage abilities and powers, they gain a bonus equal to half the level that creature’s highest level ability is gained at, rounded up. This applies to attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and opposed rolls. Similarly, those creatures fight with a penalty of the same amount against the Tome Elemental.

Book Bound:

Destroying knowledge, prowess, or important texts cuts right to the heart of all nearby Tomes Elementals. Discharging a spell or ability without using it, such as by targeting nothing and gaining no other benefit, deals 1d6 damage for every two levels required to gain that ability. Tomes Elementals within 120 ft. must make a DC 15 Wisdom save in order to take half damage. A failure also stuns the elemental and it loses its next action resorting its own body’s texts. Destruction of a significant text, deed, scroll, or similar repository of knowledge, philosophy, or law functions similarly, with the damage dealt based on the value of the text, including its rarity and importance, 1d6 per 100 of value, to a maximum of 5d6, but this damage does not risk the Tomes elemental losing its next action.

Comfortable Cognition:

If a creature within 120ft. regains the use of an ability, spell slot, or power, the Tomes Elemental heals 1d4 hit points per two levels required to gain that ability.

Knowledge Hungry:

As an action, the Tomes Elemental may make a single slam attack against a target within reach to attempt to dislodge and use an ability of the target. On a hit, the creature loses one use of an available ability or spell slot of the elemental’s choice. This takes the form of a translucent scroll that rolls up the elemental’s arm and into its body. It can utilize that stolen ability using either its own ability scores or the original owner’s, whichever are higher. The stolen ability, if unused, will be slowly transformed into gibberish on the ghostly scroll and gone after 10 minutes per two levels required to gain the ability, its original owner cannot recharge or regain use of that ability until that time has passed or it is retrieved. The ability can be retrieved from the elemental’s corpse or while it is helpless. If it is helpless, the attempt requires a Wisdom or Intelligence opposed check at disadvantage.
